Polari (n): a slang language that was a conglomeration of Italian, English rhyme, and Yiddish used by the gay population in England during the 19th and 20th centuries in order to disguise homosexual activity from hostile outsiders and policemen. Many of these terms–such as “butch” and “ogle”–are still used today.
