Go See This: The Kids Are All Right

Because the equally stellar actresses Annette Bening and Julianne Moore play a lesbian couple.

If this did not already convince you, here’s more:

Set to be released this coming July 7th, The Kids Are All Right is going to be a big summer hit, I just know it. Already a breakout star of this past Sundance Film Festival, it was quickly picked up by Focus Features for $4.8 million dollars, the biggest sale at the festival by a long shot.

A comedy-drama directed by lesbian Lisa Cholodenko (who’s directed an episode of the L Word and an episode of Six Feet Under, as well as a couple of films) centers around Jules (Moore) and Nic (Bening), a lesbian couple with two children they each conceived through artificial insemination.  The problem? When their daughter hits 18, she and her brother decide to call up the sperm bank to meet their biological father, Paul (Mark Ruffalo). Everyone meets and all hell breaks loose.

News of this film has had me excited for months, and after watching the just released trailer for the first time, I’m left simply gushing.  Bening and Moore are two of my favorite actresses of all time, always flourishing in daring roles. Here together, they make a perfect couple with Bening looking fabulous sporting a spiky cropped do and Moore positively glowing (and in a much better lesbian role than in the currently in theaters and quite ridiculous Chloe).

Favorite awesome scene? Moore tells a frazzled Bening: “Go easy on the wine, hon, its daytime.” To which Bening quips back: “Okay, same goes for the micromanaging, okay?”

Absolutely hilarious and adorable. But why listen to me ramble? Watch the trailer for yourself and then go see it in July. The Kids is not just all right, it’s a great feel good summer film with a positive spin for lesbian moms everywhere!

It’s great to see Hollywood being more inclusive in its themes. (Thank you Annette Bening and Julianne Moore for your part!)

I think Cholodenko is an excellent filmmaker. I really look forward to this one. I love how fresh and creative she is, as well as how she’s not afraid to tackle contemporary storylines.
