Paul Scott Targets Transgendered People: “It’s a Social Values Issue”

22 Jan

More later, favorite queers, but I wanted to post this as soon as possible so that you’d all have time to read and be absolutely horrified.

Michigan State Rep. Paul Scott announced his plans to run for the GOP nomination for Secretary of State about a week ago. Read the full article here and let us know what you think. His announcement letter listed four policy priorities, including

I will make it a priority to ensure transgender individuals will not be allowed to change the sex on their driver’s license in any circumstances.

Other gems from Scott include:

  • “It’s a social values issue. If you are born a male, you should be known as a male. Same as with a female, she should be known as a female.”
  • “When asked to explain how such a mandate from the Secretary of State would benefit Michigan, he said it was about ‘preventing people who are males genetically from dressing as a woman and going into female bathrooms.”
  • “He said his mandate would be in place even for those who had completely undergone sex reassignment surgeries. ‘That’s who you are. You can have cosmetic surgery or reassignment surgery but you are still that gender,’ he said.”

Scott has proven himself unforgivably ignorant, hateful, and homophobic. I’m always amazed that the LGBT community is accused of pushing an agenda when people like this exist, not to mention shocked that any public official can be so backwards. And I certainly agree with Julie Nemecek (Michigan trans activist), who called Scott “not fit to serve the people of Michigan.”

We’ll follow up soon with more of our own thoughts; stay posted!
