Queering Christmas, New Zealand-Style

19 Dec

Jameson offers his thoughts on this billboard, which was put up by St. Matthew-in-the-City Church in Auckland, New Zealand.

Though the controversial billboard depicting Mary and Joseph post-coitus was defaced hours after being unveiled, the fact that it was given the green light in the first place definitely makes me want to invite a few New Zealanders to my next party. But in all seriousness, I give a lot of credit to the congregation of St. Matthew-in-the-City Church and their vicar, Archdeacon Glynn Cardy, who said that they wanted “to get people to think more about what Christmas is all about” and challenge the idea of a male God ‘impregnating’ Mary.

I can’t lie, however: I am disappointed that another proposed billboard, featuring sperm showering down to earth with the text ‘Joy to the World,’ was never seen to fruition. Queer or not, I am still dreaming of a white Christmas…
